Collaborative experimental networks
The Altieri Lab is engaged in several experimental networks. These collaborations provide a regional or global perspective on ecological dynamics by replicating experiments and associated observations at sites that span biogeographic barriers. They have proven useful for testing the generality of ecological processes, examining synergies between large-scale processes and small-scale interactions, and communicating across institutional and national boundaries to foster intellectual growth. One such network is MarineGEO (Marine Global Earth Observatory), which studies linkages between biodiversity, ecosystem function, and human wellbeing by taking a global and long-term perspective on ocean dynamics and the resilience of coastal ecosystems. Andrew Altieri previously served as the Site PI for MarineGEO in Panama and hosted several postdocs and student trainees through the program. The Altieri Lab is also associated with the NSF-sponsored Thalassia experimental network which is currently underway to examine how consumer and resource interactions affect seagrass resilience across latitudinal gradients. The Lab has also helped launch collaborative networks to examine the global significance of facilitation cascades, and to mentor graduate students through international collaborations in the Bridging the Americas Marine Conservation Fellowship program.
